Why Level Matters
Each SpellingKids app is designed around the specific vocabulary complexity expected at that level in regional and national spelling bee competitions. Choosing a level too easy means missed growth; too hard means frustration and burnout.
Start with Your Current Level
The simplest rule: start with your actual school grade. If you are in grade 5, start with the Level 5 app. The words are calibrated to challenge you appropriately and build confidence as you progress through the decks.
When to Go Up a Level
If you complete all decks in your level app and find the words relatively easy, consider moving up to the next level. Many competition-level students use Level 7 or 8 words regardless of their current school grade.
Understanding Word Difficulty Progression
Level 4 focuses on foundational vocabulary and common word roots. Levels 5–6 introduce more complex Latin and Greek origins. Levels 7–8 include rare, multi-syllabic words often seen at state and national levels.
