Help & User Guide
Everything you need to know to get the most out of SpellingKids.
Getting Started
Download the App
Search for "SpellingKids" on the Google Play Store, or use the link on this page. Choose the app that matches your level (Level 4 through Level 8). All apps are free to download.
Choose Your Level
Select the app that matches your school grade. If you are preparing for a competition, consider also downloading the next level up for additional challenge words.
Open the App
When you open SpellingKids for the first time, you will see a deck selection screen. Decks are organized by topic and difficulty within your level.
Using Flashcards
Starting a Session
Tap any deck to begin a study session. The app will present cards based on what is due for review today plus any new cards up to your daily limit.
Reviewing a Card
Each flashcard shows the word spelling on the front. Tap to flip the card and see the definition, IPA pronunciation, part of speech, language of origin, and example sentence.
Rating Your Response
After seeing the card back, rate your recall: Easy (remembered perfectly), Good (remembered with effort), or Hard (forgot or struggled). Your rating determines when this card appears next.
Understanding Spaced Repetition
How Scheduling Works
SpellingKids uses a spaced repetition system (SRS) that tracks each card's review history. Easy cards appear less frequently. Hard cards come back sooner. The algorithm adapts to your personal learning pace.
New Cards vs Due Cards
Each session mixes new cards (words you haven't seen yet) with due cards (words scheduled for review today). The balance is managed automatically — you don't need to configure anything.
Card Slots (Progress Levels)
Cards move through slots (levels) as you rate them. Slot 0 = brand new. Higher slots = stronger memory. A card at Slot 5 is well-remembered and won't appear for weeks.
Settings & Customization
Daily New Card Limit
In Settings, you can configure how many new words are introduced each day (default: 10). Increasing this accelerates coverage but also increases daily review volume in future sessions.
Total Cards Per Day
This setting caps the total number of cards (new + review) shown in a single session. Adjust it based on how much time you have available each day.
Instruction Pages
Toggle whether to show instruction pages when starting a flashcard or spelling session. Turn these off once you are comfortable with the app to save time.
Study Tips
Study Every Day
Spaced repetition only works if you review consistently. Missing days causes cards to pile up and breaks the scheduling rhythm. Even 10 minutes daily is better than 2 hours once a week.
Be Honest in Your Ratings
Rate cards accurately — don't mark Hard cards as Easy to get them out of your queue. Honest ratings are what make the algorithm work. Overrating leads to gaps on competition day.
Start 8–12 Weeks Before Competition
Words need multiple review cycles across weeks to move into long-term memory. Starting early gives the SRS algorithm enough time to cycle each word through all its review intervals.
